What this software does
Text>Draw is a simple multi-tasking
RISC OS 3 application, that converts a
text string into a draw object. It is
possible to include in the text sub and
super script styles, and up to six font
styles. These are all user selectable.
The resulting draw file may be saved to
disc, or may be loaded directly into any
application that will load draw files.
Since text>draw will allow the use of
kerned text, it is one way of
introducing kerned text into draw (the
current version will display such text,
but you cannot enter it directly).

Running the application
This software is fully RISC-OS
compatible, and is multi-tasking. Double
clicking on the !Text>Draw icon in a
directory viewer will install its icon
on the icon bar.
The main window is opened simply by
clicking SELECT on this icon. If the
main window is subsequently closed, and
the icon is once again clicked on, then
the window is reopened in the same state
as when it was closed.

The Iconbar Menu
Clicking with MENU on the icon offers
the following options:
Info
The standard information box, with
version number. This is the number that
should be quoted in any communication
regarding the application.

Choices...
The opens a dialogue window that allows
the default parameters to be changed.
These are the six font styles, the
nominal size of the font, the fraction
of a full line that the sub/super script
is shifted, and it is also possible to
have the sub/super script part of the
text in a different font size. This
facility may be enabled or disabled by
clicking on the appropriate icon. If
disabled, the size icon is greyed out.
You may also enable or disable text
kerning.
Clicking on OK will cause the new
parameters to be used from then on in
the display or draw file. Clicking on
Save will make the current settings
become the default when the application
is next started. Cancel will remove the
window, but not make any changes.
Remember that the default settings are
saved within the application directory.
If originally run from floppy disc, the
filer may request the disc to be
inserted before saving the settings.
Quit
Terminates Text>Draw.

The Text>Draw Main Window
Clicking the 'menu' button in the main
window brings up the following choices.
Help
Opens this help window (f1 can be used
if the window owns the caret).
Show tools
This option allows the tool window to
be closed or reinstated. All the
"control codes" are ASCII characters,
and so text>draw can be driven entirely
from the keyboard if so desired. The
"control codes" consist of the vertical
bar (on key above <return>) followed by
another character as detailed below.
|U gives half line UP
|D gives half line down
|N gives normal text style
|I gives italic text style
|B gives bold text style
|C gives bold.italic style
|S gives symbol style
|T gives alternative symbol style
It is of course possible to use any
outline font style for any of the
nominal styles.
Save file
Following the arrow to the right of
this option will lead to two choices,
which allow the saving of the data
either in draw file or text file format.
In both cases a standard "save as"
dialogue box is raised. The file
icon may be dragged to a directory
viewer, or if the full filename path is
set up it is possible to click on OK.
You can use f3 or SHIFT-f3 as keyboard
shortcuts for the draw and text "save
as" boxes respectively, if the Text>Draw
window has the input focus (caret). Data
can be saved to disc or to another
application in the standard ways. RAM
transfer protocol is implemented for
saving to applications, assuming there
is some memory available in the next
slot/free pool.
When it is first loaded into !draw, the
whole text appears as one object, and
may be scaled, moved, etc. as a whole.
The objects (if you have used more than
one font, or sub/super script) making up
the text object may be ungrouped if
required. This allows adjustment of
individual parts (although the main
point of text>draw is to produce the
text all neatly lined up, etc!).
________________________________________
Other points
If changing style between a word, enter
the "control characters" before the
space, rather than after it, otherwise
the space will appear to be lost when
converted to a draw file (Draw appears
to strip trailing spaces from a text
object, or maybe it is something to do
with the bounding boxes?).
It is also possible to load text into
the main window by dragging an icon from
a directory viewer, or from an editor
such as edit. The first line of the text
will appear in the writable icon, and
will also be displayed as it will appear
in !Draw. Note that Text>Draw will not
load any file that does not have
filetype text.
When using text editors, the control
characters may be entered as the
vertical bar (|) followed by the
appropriate character. The "codes"
used in the present version are detailed
above.
If the size of the text object being
displayed becomes too large for the main
window, the window extent will be
increased automatically, and the text
display may then be scrolled as
necessary. In the current version, the
window does not contract in size once it
has been extended.
